Why are HR managers so surprised when their rockstars leave to "pursue other opportunities"?
And furthermore, what makes them think an exit interview is going to reveal something that common sense wouldn't? Because there's a big misunderstanding about the psychology behind job satisfaction. Most managers assume that people who excel at their work are happy at work. The logic may be correct, but the assumption is not; thus the surprise. The truth is strong performance does not indicate a satisfied worker--if you want to know what does, then ask them.
Substituting true leadership for carrots is an act done in vain.
